Event Details

This fascinating event features Cambridge professor and historian Peter Mandler and Director General of Historic Houses, Ben Cowell, in a discussion about the changing fortunes of stately homes during the past 150 years. Peter’s book (of the same title as this event) was the original inspiration for this talk, and explains the historical vicissitudes leading to the decline, then revitalisation of stately homes in the UK. Ben’s soon-to-be-published book, The British Country House Revival, carries on from where Peter’s left off and emphasises how such places have thrived in recent decades, making this a golden age for houses in the country.

This ticket includes a glass of champagne followed by a set lunch (with a glass of wine) after the talk.

We recommend that all ticketholders for the talk arrive 15 minutes in advance, at 11:45 am.

Subject to availability of tour places, purchase of a ticket for this event entitles you to book a place for a complimentary tour of the Jockey Club Rooms' world-renowned collection of equine art taking place prior to the talk, at 11 am. Since places are limited, you must be in possession of a separate Tour ticket in order to gain admission to the tour. Please book your tour ticket on the Tickets page of the EA Festival website.
